Rainwater Tanks – Seasonal Water Restrictions

December 16 by : admin

It is important that families are prepared for the extremities that severe bouts of weather have in the surrounding environment and themselves. In a previous article we spoke about the gains to be had
by having a rainwater tank in a bushfire zone. This article looks at building on that concept & why it is can be vital to have a rainwater tank in water restricted areas.

With the world’s constantly changing climate cycle’s, the current trends in global climate changes are that the summers have been getting hotter, winters are getting colder and overall the weather from day to day is becoming more and more unpredictable. In addition to the traditional four seasons of spring, summer, autumn & winter, here in Australia, there are also the Wet & Dry seasons to consider.

The Wet & Dry seasons are caused by the El Nino & La Nina cycle. El Nino (“the boy”) causes the warming of the Pacific Ocean, which results in the dry season in Australia. La Nina (“the girl”) causes
the cooling of the Pacific Ocean, which results in the wet season in Australia. This cycle is important to understand, as it helps us plan ahead around whatever weather nature throws our way.

El Nino, the boy, is warm and dry; La Nina, the girl, is cold and cries -A children’s rhyme.”

Water restrictions are often implemented throughout the dry season. They can occur at any time of year and can last for any amount of time, the trigger being drought. Many area’s in Australia live with the challenge of permanent water restrictions on a day to day basis. Other areas, the droughts can last from as long as a few months to a number of years – with water restrictions being put in place and kept throughout those times.

The ideal solution to overcoming these water restrictions is the installation of a rainwater tank. Whilst people without a rainwater tank would be prevented from using mains water for tasks requiring copious amounts of water; people with rainwater tanks can enjoy having water onsite readily available for luxuries such as; washing the car, watering the garden and even filling a pool (should you have one).

Water restrictions are dealt with on a state by state basis.  To find out what the water restrictions are in your local area visit, http://www.bom.gov.au/water/restrictions/. Some states also provide rebates for the installation of rainwater tanks & other water saving incentives.
